✂️ PDF SmartSplit Split a PDF
100% in your browser — payroll data never uploaded

Split a payroll register PDF into one file per employee.

Payroll registers from ADP, Gusto, QuickBooks, and Sage export as one long PDF with no bookmarks — and every employee's section is a different length. PDF SmartSplit finds each new employee by matching text like "Employee ID" or an employee's name, and splits there automatically. Runs entirely in this browser tab.

No signup. No install. Free for registers up to 30 pages.

How to split a payroll register by employee

Most payroll systems export the full register as a single PDF with no bookmarks, so splitting it by hand means scrolling through and copy-pasting pages one employee at a time. Here's the faster way.

1

Drop your register PDF in

It loads into your browser's memory only — nothing is uploaded, so there's no compliance question to answer.

2

Pick the text that starts each employee's section

Most registers repeat a label like "Employee ID", "Employee Name", or "Emp #" at the top of every employee's block — enter it below and every page containing it starts a new file.

3

Download one zip, one PDF per employee

Each employee's pages — however many there are — come out as their own PDF inside a single zip download.

Honest limitation: this only works on payroll registers with a real, selectable text layer — the kind your payroll system generates directly as a PDF. A scanned paper register run through a copier has no extractable text, so text-match splitting can't find the employee boundaries (page-count splitting still works). PDF SmartSplit uses pdf.js to read the text and pdf-lib to assemble each employee's pages into their own file, both running as JavaScript in this page.

Need to rename each file by employee automatically?

Free tier splits and numbers the files for you. Pro (in development) renames each output from the extracted text — e.g. jane-doe_2026-08-15.pdf instead of part-03.pdf — plus multi-file batch processing and unlimited pages. One-time $19, no subscription.

Your payroll data never leaves your browser

PDF SmartSplit has no upload endpoint, no server that touches your document, and no account to leak. Open your browser's network tab while you split a register — you'll see it stay quiet. Processing uses pdf.js and pdf-lib running as JavaScript in this tab; the zip is built in memory and handed straight to your browser's download dialog.
