How to split a combined payslip PDF by employee

When a payroll run exports every employee's payslip into a single PDF, distributing it means either emailing the whole batch (which shows everyone else's pay) or manually copying pages one employee at a time. Here's the faster, private way.

Most payslip exports repeat a label at the top of every employee's page — try "Employee Name", "National Insurance Number", or "Pay Date". Enter it below and every page containing it starts a new file.

Why "Employee Name" or "National Insurance Number" work well as a match: both are printed once near the top of every payslip and rarely appear anywhere else on the page, so they make a clean, reliable boundary. If your export instead repeats a "Pay Date" that's identical for every employee in the batch, use "Every N pages" mode instead — it works whenever each payslip is a fixed number of pages. Honest limitation: text-match splitting only works on a payslip PDF with a real, selectable text layer — the kind your payroll system generates directly. A scanned paper payslip run through a copier has no extractable text (page-count splitting still works there). PDF SmartSplit uses pdf.js to read the text and pdf-lib to assemble each employee's pages into their own file, both running as JavaScript in this page.
