How to split a PDF by account number

Utility billing runs, property management statements, and financial account exports all share the same shape: one PDF, many accounts, no bookmarks, and a different page count per account. Here's how to pull each account out as its own file.

Why "Account Number" works well as a match: it's printed once near the top of every account's pages and almost never appears anywhere else, so it makes a clean boundary even when accounts run to very different lengths — a customer with one invoice this month and a customer with five look the same to the tool, because it's matching text, not counting pages. Honest limitation: this only works on PDFs with a real, selectable text layer — the kind billing and financial systems generate directly. A scanned document run through a copier has no extractable text, so text-match splitting can't find the account boundaries (page-count splitting still works). PDF SmartSplit uses pdf.js to read the text and pdf-lib to assemble each account's pages into their own file, both running as JavaScript in this page.
